Ankle injuries while playing tennis are more than just a minor setback, they can significantly impact a player's performance and overall well-being. Understanding some essential facts about these injuries can help players better prevent and manage them. Firstly, ankle sprains are the most common type of injury in tennis, often occurring due to sudden shifts in direction or awkward landings. These sprains can range from mild to severe, affecting ligaments and stability. Moreover, tennis players are particularly prone to lateral ankle sprains, where the foot rolls inward, stressing the outer ligaments. Additionally, repetitive stress on the ankle joint from the quick, lateral movements required in tennis can lead to overuse injuries like tendonitis. Proper warm-up routines, adequate footwear, and strengthening exercises targeting ankle stability can all play pivotal roles in reducing the risk of ankle injuries and ensuring a more enjoyable and injury-free tennis experience. If you have endured an ankle injury while playing tennis, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition, and offer you prevention strategies.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact Soorena Sadri, DPM of FootWorx Active Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

How Systemic Diseases Can Affect Feet

There are a host of systemic diseases that can contribute to various foot problems, affecting mobility and quality of life. Sciatica, caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, can lead to radiating pain, numbness, and tingling sensations in the feet. Hypothyroidism, characterized by low thyroid hormone levels, may result in cold feet, swelling, and thickened skin. Embolic arterial occlusion, a sudden blockage of an artery by a traveling clot, can cause acute pain, discoloration, and decreased sensation in the feet. Treatment for these conditions varies, depending on the underlying cause and severity. Sciatica may require pain management or surgery in severe cases. Hypothyroidism typically involves hormone replacement therapy and lifestyle modifications. Treatment for embolic arterial occlusion can include blood thinners, thrombolytic therapy, or surgical intervention. If you are experiencing foot problems associated with a systemic disease, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for personalized care and treatment to improve foot function.

When dealing with systemic disease of the feet, it is extremely important to check the affected areas routinely so that any additional problems are caught quickly.  If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles contact Soorena Sadri, DPM from FootWorx Active Podiatry. Systemic Diseases of the Feet

Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable.  Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.

Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.

Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.

Diabetes of the Feet

Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.

Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

Facts About Flat Feet

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, are a common condition where the arches of the feet collapse, causing the entire sole of the foot to come into contact with the ground. This can result in discomfort, pain, and even difficulty while walking for some individuals. Flat feet can be caused by various factors, including genetics, injury, or the natural aging process. In some cases, flat feet may not cause any symptoms and may not require treatment. However, for those experiencing pain or discomfort, wearing supportive footwear and orthotic inserts can provide relief by providing additional arch support. Strengthening exercises and stretches may also help improve foot function and alleviate symptoms. With proper management, individuals with flat feet can lead active and fulfilling lives while minimizing any associated discomfort or limitations. If you have flat feet that are causing discomfort, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can offer you a tailored treatment plan for relief.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Soorena Sadri, DPM from FootWorx Active Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Plantar fasciitis, a common cause of heel pain, can be debilitating, affecting daily activities. While conventional therapies like steroid injections, physical therapy, or manipulation offer relief for some, others find greater success with orthotics. Orthotics provide customized support, redistributing pressure on the foot and reducing strain on the plantar fascia, aiding in healing and preventing recurrence. Unlike temporary relief from injections or therapy, orthotics address the root cause of plantar fasciitis by correcting biomechanical imbalances. If you have persistent heel pain, it is strongly suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Custom orthotics may be the answer to alleviating your pain, restoring function, and improving your quality of life.

Discover relief from persistent foot pain with custom orthotics and shoe inserts. If you’re battling heel pain, these personalized solutions offer targeted support, addressing the root causes of discomfort. Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, affects millions of individuals in the United States. It is caused by reduced blood flow due to plaque buildup in peripheral arteries. PAD often targets the lower extremities, seriously affecting the legs and feet. A common indicator of peripheral artery disease is intermittent muscle pain in the lower legs during activity that subsides with rest. Other signs include diminished toenail and leg hair growth, temperature disparities between feet and non-healing wounds. Treatment from a podiatrist is essential for alleviating symptoms and preventing further complications. Podiatrists can offer various treatment options for PAD, including custom orthotic devices and footwear modifications, and in severe cases, surgical intervention. Additionally, lifestyle adjustments, such as smoking cessation and managing underlying conditions like hypertension, are essential in PAD management. Early intervention not only improves quality of life but also reduces the risk of severe complications associated with PAD. If you experience symptoms of peripheral artery disease that is affecting your lower legs and feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Peripheral artery disease can pose a serious risk to your health. It can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. If you have symptoms of peripheral artery disease, consult with Soorena Sadri, DPM from FootWorx Active Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is when arteries are constricted due to plaque (fatty deposits) build-up. This results in less blood flow to the legs and other extremities. The main cause of PAD is atherosclerosis, in which plaque builds up in the arteries.

Symptoms

Symptoms of PAD include:

  • Claudication (leg pain from walking)
  • Numbness in legs
  • Decrease in growth of leg hair and toenails
  • Paleness of the skin
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Sores and wounds on legs and feet that won’t heal
  • Coldness in one leg

It is important to note that a majority of individuals never show any symptoms of PAD.

Diagnosis

While PAD occurs in the legs and arteries, Podiatrists can diagnose PAD. Podiatrists utilize a test called an ankle-brachial index (ABI). An ABI test compares blood pressure in your arm to you ankle to see if any abnormality occurs. Ultrasound and imaging devices may also be used.

Treatment

Fortunately, lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and quitting smoking, can all treat PAD. Medications that prevent clots from occurring can be prescribed. Finally, in some cases, surgery may be recommended.
